Uterine Fibroids: When to Worry and What to Do
By Dr. Sarbani Ghosh
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus and are very common. Many women have fibroids without symptoms, while others may experience heavy bleeding, anemia, pain, or difficulty conceiving.
Symptoms that need evaluation
Heavy or prolonged periods, passage of clots, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, pain, or increasing abdominal size are common reasons to consult.
How fibroids are assessed
A pelvic exam and ultrasound are usually the first steps. Depending on symptoms, we may recommend additional imaging or blood tests (especially if anemia is suspected).
Treatment options
Treatment depends on size, location, symptoms, age, and pregnancy plans. Options may include medications for bleeding control, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery such as myomectomy when preservation of the uterus is important.
For more details, see Fibroids and Myomectomy. If you have heavy bleeding or pain, book an appointment for a focused assessment.
