Irregular and Heavy Bleeding: Causes, Warning Signs, and Next Steps
By Dr. Sarbani Ghosh
Changes in menstrual flow are common, but persistent heavy bleeding or unpredictable cycles should be evaluated, especially if you feel tired, dizzy, or develop anemia.
Common causes
Hormonal imbalance, fibroids, uterine polyps, thyroid issues, PCOS, and perimenopausal changes can contribute. Sometimes, medications or bleeding disorders can play a role.
Warning signs
Soaking pads frequently, passing large clots, bleeding between periods, prolonged bleeding, or symptoms of anemia (weakness, breathlessness) warrant prompt consultation.
How we evaluate
Evaluation may include examination, ultrasound, blood tests, and in selected cases, hysteroscopy to assess the uterine cavity.
See our Irregular and Heavy bleeding problems page, and book an appointment if you are concerned.
